Joy
The metal structure made of steel, roxors, vinglons and rods represents an abstracted figure with clasped hands. Entitled 'Joy', its current appearance is not the final and fixed form of this work.
The sculpture, which belongs to the artist's "Bezva úča" series, was created for a specific place, the upper gallery of Mikulov Castle.
"Joy" is built here for direct communication with the Holy Hill, which is viewed through the passage between the different parts of the castle.
This spatial object is designed to be subject to surface corrosion and at the same time to serve as a support structure for a plant - a liana - that will grow through it and gradually fill it in.
The work was created and installed as part of the 29th Mikulov Art Symposium "Workshop".
Kurt Gebauer
Kurt Gebauer was born in Hradec nad Moravicí, he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno and the Sculpture and Stonework School of Arts and Crafts in Hořice. In 1963-1969 he studied under professors Vincenc Makovský and Karel Lidický at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1965, during his studies, he completed an internship with Professor Otto Herbert Hajek in Stuttgart and in 1972 he completed an internship with Professor César Baldaccini at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since 1990 he has been working as a leading teacher and since 1992 he has been a professor at the Sculpture Studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Since 2018 he has also been a professor at the Department of Art and Culture at the Faculty of Arts of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
